2013 FIBA Americas Championship all set to start; 4 teams to qualify for 2014 Spain FIBA World Cup

The 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for men is all set to start in Caracas, Venezuela. 10 teams from the FIBA Americas sub zone will fight for the prestigious FIBA Americas championship title and most importantly they will fight for a top 4 spot to qualify for the 2014 SPAIN FIBA World Cup for next year. The championship will be held in Caracas, Venezuela, from August 30 to September 11, 2013.

As United States of America (USA) is already qualified for the 2014 SPAIN as the gold medalist of the 2012 LONDON Olympic Games, below are the 10 teams that are qualified to participate in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Men and play for the top 4 spots to book their ticket to 2014 Spain.

Central American and Caribbean Sub-Zone (Qualified from 2012 Centrobasket):

  1. Dominican Republic
  2. Puerto Rico
  3. Jamaica
  4. Mexico

North American Sub-Zone:

  1. Canada

South American Sub-Zone (Qualified from South American Basketball Championship 2012)

  1. Argentina
  2. Venezuela
  3. Uruguay
  4. Brazil
  5. Paraguay

Format of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Men

The ten teams are split into two groups. The best four teams of each group advance to the second round, where the teams play against the four teams from the other group; each team carries over all points earned during the first round, except for those earned in the match against the team that was eliminated. The best four teams of this group advance to the semifinals and are qualified for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The United States, which won the Olympic Gold Medal in 2012, automatically qualifies for the 2014 FIBA Tournament and does not have to participate as a result.

Group A

  1. Uruguay
  2. Puerto Rico
  3. Canada
  4. Jamaica
  5. Brazil

Group B

  1. Mexico
  2. Dominican Republic
  3. Venezuela
  4. Paraguay
  5. Argentina

The final of the championship will be played on 11 September 2013. With the USA already qualified for 2014 SPAIN FIBA World Cup and not participating in the championship, Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic are expected to book their ticket to the 2014 SPAIN FIBA World Cup.
