The 2nd South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Basketball Championship for Men is has started in the Bangladeshi capitol, Dhaka. The championship will end on 21 January 2013. Top three teams of South Asia, India, Afghanistan and Srilanka had pulled out of the championship. Five countries naming hosts Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives are taking part in the five day event. The championship will be played in the league format with all the participating teams playing with each other once and the team that accumulates highest points will be crowned champions.
The first edition of the SABA Mens Basketball championship was held from 2 – 6 March 2001 at NF railway station, Maligaon, Guwahati, India. Hosts India drubbed Bangladesh 139 – 34 to win the title while Nepal finished third in 2001 beating Maldives.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarkar, MP inaugurated the five-day meet in the afternoon while Chief Executive Officer (CE0) of the meet’s sponsor Citycell Mehbub Chowdhury was also present as special guest.
President of Bangladesh Basketball Federation Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin and General Secretary AK Sarker were also present on the occasion.
On the first day of the championship Nepal beat Maldives 82 – 57 while hosts Bangladesh beat Bhutan 89 – 44.
