Mid Region Basketball Selection tournament for 6th National Games was concluded at Kavre with Lalitpur team beating Kathmandu 77 – 62. There were time when Kathmandu district used to be unchallenged but now Lalitpur has beaten Kathmandu to become powerhouse of Nepalese Basketball.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on Thursday officially launched the 2014 edition of its flagship tournament by revealing its brand new name, the FIBA Basketball World Cup, at a special event in the Spanish capital on 26th Jan 2012.

There was a distinct national flavour to the evening as the logo of the FIBA Basketball World Cup was unveiled and the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) formally presented the six host cities – Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Seville, Granada and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann explained the thinking behind the name change of the biggest international basketball tournament from ‘FIBA World Championship’ to ‘FIBA Basketball World Cup’ in front of the more than 400 guests which included eminent members of Spanish society, political institutions and the business world.

“The new name is short and catchy. The term ‘World Cup’ is known by people all over the globe and resonates in different languages: Copa del Mundo, Coppa del Mondo, Coupe du Monde,” he said.

Nepal Basketball Association President Mr. Lama Tendi Sherpa and Secretary General Mr. Dinesh Thapa attended the launching ceremony of FIBA Basketball World Cup at Madrid on 26 Jan 2012.

Rabindra Maharjan AKA Maskey is appointed coach of National U18 Men’s Basketball Coach for MID ZONE U18 Men’s qualifiers scheduled to be held at New Delhi, India from 9 t0 11 February 2012.

Senior sports journalist Ishwar Man Singh passed away on Monday morning. Singh, 75, breathed his last at the Blue Cross Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for paralysis.

Singh was the founder president of South Asian Sports Journalists Association Nepal and worked in various media as sports journalists. He also served at the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) for 30 years and later retired as its managing editor. Singh was the editor of sports magazines ´Khelkud Manch´ and ´Nepal Sports and Leisure´.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and 8 daughters. His final rites were performed at Kankeshwari on Monday.

Basketball Night organized

A grand get-together of Nepalese Basketball titled “BASKETBALL NIGHT” was organized by Kathmandu Basketball Association with the help fro Nepal Basketball Association on 31st December 2011 at TT hall, Lainchour, Kathmandu, Nepal. Around 400 basketball fans, players, coaches, officials, sponsors, media personalities etc. were present on the Basketball Night to celebrate the New Years Eve program. DJ session was held at the night while National team players Rabindra Maharjan and Bipendra Maharjan were honored on the occasion.

Kathmandu Beer was the official sponsor of the Basketball Night.

 

Ideal English School won the title of senior boys´ category in the Second Ideal Inter School Basketball Tournament on Tuesday while Neric lifted junior boys´ title.

Host Ideal defeated Saipal 21-17 in the final of senior boys´ as Bibek Tamang scored 10 points. Aashish Tamang of Ideal received the most valuable player of the tournament award in the section. Meanwhile, Neric pulled a 21-18 victory over Awareness International Academy (AIA) as the most valuable player Indra Khadka scored 16 points for Neric.
